Early Riser 04:03
Early riser rakes the embers To wake the fire that lights December In the silver morning silence I remember There’s a gentler livin’ that I once knew Call me up and call me over To be a tender kind of soldier And it’s all that I can do to be bolder In my smoldering youth And I wanna be there Drifting off all worries lost to salty air And I wanna be there Rolling soft across the water, calm and fair Call me up and call me over To offer arms and ears and shoulders As the days space and late calls draw us closer I get older like you Time has tried and called us torn, true Still I’m more a child when I am with you We’ve seen skies of little fires, of gray, of clear blue Oh the home in me is home in you too And I wanna be there Drifting off all worries lost to salty air And I wanna be there Rolling soft across the water, calm and fair

Sparkle. Sunny days. I get older In every way that won’t matter Kindergarten heart in me Magic. Green and blue. I am wilder In every way that I choose Dogpile. Funny faces. I’m fragile In funny ways that are piling On with age Old time souvenirs of a gold mine Of greener years And I’m trying, but I get it wrong So I back down from the fight When there’s nothing left to bite But my own tongue Castles. Sand and snow. Build a fortress A mighty home in your elbows Knees and toes Barefeet. Barley kissing my soles. Sweet This summer’s all that I know Broad smile. Funny faces. I’m fragile In funny ways that are piling On with age Old time souvenirs of a gold mine Of greener years And I’m trying, but I get it wrong So I back down from the fight When there’s nothing left to bite But my own tongue Oh my stars. I am nothing but a shark I have nothing but a head in my heart I’ve been workin’ late I’ve got too much on my plate So, it's looking like it might be time to spark Oh my stars. I am nothing but a shark I have nothing but a head in my heart I’ve been workin’ late I’ve got too much on my plate So, it's looking like it might be time to spark That kindergarten heart

Fun 02:43
Fun. We are one We are dancing slow and steady with the sun Don’t let it get me in a funk Don’t let it get in my head Yeah, I knock on the oak that I place in the stove And I pray the perdition be fed Crash. Blood and glass We are snagged and humming heavy from the blast Don’t let it get me off path Don’t let it get in my head Yeah, I know what I want and I know what I need But baby I don’t know what I’ll get Yeah, I know what I want and I know what I need But baby I don’t know what I’ll get Fun. We are one We are dancing slow and steady with the sun Don’t let it get me in a funk Don’t let it get in my head Yeah, I knock on the oak that I place in the stove And I pray the perdition be fed Yeah, I know what I want and I know what I need But baby I don’t know what I’ll get Yeah, I know what I want and I know what I need But baby I don’t know what I’ll get Yeah, I know what I want and I know what I need But baby I don’t know what I’ll get

Sidewalk 03:34
An impulse to passive Your objections are born in brackets Your charm is a swarm of tangled habits Your heart’s on the sidewalk You drew it there in blue chalk now it’s Fading away with every raindrop And I wish that I could help you but that’s all in your head Yeah you’re reeling from a feeling that is yours to mend Yours to mend Yours to mend Your strikes go unmentioned and of your gutters the talks unending You are playing up gray, your favorite weapon Your heart’s on the sidewalk You drew it there in blue chalk now it’s Fading away with every raindrop And I wish that I could help you but that’s all in your head Yeah you’re reeling from a feeling that is yours to mend Yours to mend Yours to mend Straight down I have whittled Truth bone through the skin And still I riddle me this one Will you ever win? Your heart’s on the sidewalk You drew it there in blue chalk and it’s Fading away with every raindrop

New Favorite 02:39
If life it is a small town, then You would be the way, love Everybody waves just because Dancing down an empty street Open up your arms This could be your new favorite art form Oh, I remember the feeling My feet on the ground My heart in your soft hands My head in the clouds If morning is the time you thrive Let me be the sweet sun I just wanna witness you rise up Dancing down an empty street Open up your arms This could be your new favorite art form Oh, I remember the feeling Your voice in the dark It was too soon to tell you But I knew from the start Can we get lost In our days? Can we get lost In our days?
6.
Oh, a thousand perfect words could never Set the fire alight Send shivers like the night Tell the story quite right I’m not sure you’ll remember But I met you as a breeze I brushed your cheeks with kisses From a distant misty sea And you may not recall it But you answered as a stream You trickled softly, carried off the Sorrows I had seen But a thousand perfect words could never Set the fire alight Send shivers like the night Tell the story quite right I knew then if you’d let me I could love you like a dream A singing string of fairy lights To frame each sight you see And I don’t know how it’s sounding But I mean this as a song To say that I am smitten still Even if I say it wrong Because a thousand perfect words could never Set the fire alight Send shivers like the night Tell the story quite right

Heat Wave 03:01
It’s the heat wave It gives me no rest It’s got me and your curls spilling out on your chest Oh the sweet sun On whom I rely Has been stewing me steady, slow-poaching my mind I tip toe tempered Beat by the day Sleep-deprived, serpentine, softening clay It’s the heat wave It gives me no rest It’s got me and your curls spilling out on your chest It’s the heat wave It gives me no rest It’s got me and your curls spilling out on your chest

Sun and Time 04:10
Holy weary winter this one’s something I watch you suffering at its hand Boggy berry princess we are fading But I can still make out your laugh When I look back When I look back When I look back To a chamomile kind of heat And the tireless grass Do not forget you’ve got a win It can be hard, the world blind to all you did But I was there and I recall the way you never flinched at all A couple kids the kind that sun and time will fix It’ll fix Feed your body lady like you feed them Delicate darling hardly wins Feed your spirit daily, just like I’m fed Each time I remember what we built When I look back When I look back When I look back To a chamomile kind of heat And the tireless grass Do not forget you’ve got a win It can be hard, the world blind to all you did But I was there and I recall the way you never flinched at all A couple kids the kind that sun and time will fix It’ll fix When I look back When I look back When I look back When I look back To a chamomile kind of heat And the tireless grass
9.
Fool Forlorn 03:13
There’s nothing left to pay with but time And still I can’t quite tell when a feeling is mine Soul blind There’s nothing left to say that won’t kill You have grown too taut and you’re tightening still Born Oh man am I a fool forlorn A fool forlorn You say that there’s a weight in my walk That you’re trying your best, but lately you’ve Lost me Oh man am I a fool forlorn A fool forlorn But I know that there’s everything to love here in you And you’re slowly getting me thinking That it might be in me too Oh man am I a fool forlorn A fool forlorn A fool forlorn

Mastery 04:52
If I die now, I die torn Half to the river and half to the place it transforms If I stop now I get made Halfway a fighter and halfway far too afraid Oh come on you know it gets old This sorrow song If I choose now I choose wrong Feeling for chords to a chorus that’s never been sung Head up while you wait for the call Uncertainty is certain, but you could still dance ‘til you fall Hey, come on stay for the love of it all I skip the only path I’m shown to move both blind and knowing For this, the only mastery: to be at once child and poet I skip the only path I’m shown to move both blind and knowing For this, the only mastery: to be at once child and poet For this, the only mastery: to be at once child and poet – free For this, the only mastery: to be at once child and poet – free For this, the only mastery: to be at once child and poet – free For this, the only mastery: to be at once child and poet

about

Kindergarten Heart is Shaina Hayes' follow-up to to coax a waltz, released independently in 2022, and her first release with Bonsound. On both albums, the singer-songwriter worked with Francis Ledoux and David Marchand (from the band zouz) who co-produced the record. Together, the three worked to gently weave elements of nostalgia, wonder and lightheartedness into this collection of songs. The result is a sophomore album which is both whimsical and earnest, and whose soothing charm is also reflected in the design of the record.
